The Concept of SSFBT Matrix Group Therapy by Filip Caby, Belgium
Group therapy based on the SSFBT (Systemic Solution-Focused Brief Therapy) matrix concept is founded on two approaches: solution-focused brief therapy and Foulkes' group analysis. Both approaches complement each other synergistically because they assume that each group has its own "matrix," fed by everything the participants bring onto the table.
SFBT utilizes solutions and resources, while group analysis utilizes social networks. Foulkes understood individual mental disorders as the result of failed social and interpersonal exchange processes. The individual is viewed as a node in the network, and the patterns and dynamics between group members are reflected in their entirety, based on systemic thinking. Both approaches are equally interested in the participants' ideas about what a solution might look like at the end of the group process.
Furthermore, all participants can draw on the power of the group matrix to overcome certain challenges (sometimes called "problems"). But the central question is also who could learn what from whom in the group and how the others will support the process.
The "inbetween" emerges from the space created when systemic and solution-oriented perspectives meet with group analytical perspectives, and vice versa. In this workshop, the theoretical foundations of both poles will be briefly explored in depth and illustrated using practical examples.
Participants are invited to experience together how resourceful the matrix of a group can be and to reflect on this against the background of current challenges.
