About the workshop presenters:
Peter Sundman, Ferdinand Wolf, Matthias Schwab, Rytis Pakrosnis, Jonas Wells (EBTA Theory task group).
The EBTA SF Theory task group consists of experienced practitioners and SF thinkers working together for many years.
We want to support and develop and describe the evolution of, how we can understand the answer to the question: Why do we work the way we actually do work together with our clients?
In Between the Answer and the next Question
by Peter Sundman, Finland, Ferdinand Wolf, Austria, Matthias Schwab, Germani, Rytis Pakrosnis, Lithuania and Jonas Wells, Sweden
When we try to understand why therapists or coaches do what they do and say what they say, we are either referring to some theoretical assumptions or guiding principles when to do what.
SF-practitioners have a specific focus on the language, key words or metaphors that are expressed by the client and pay close attention to the calibration of the conversational flow.
But what about the open space between the mutual talking?
What is going on within the gap in between the client’s verbal expressions and the practitioner’s next question or uttering?
What do we listen to?
Why do we select certain things and not others?
How do we decide what to build on?
In this workshop we will practically explore and pay attention to this particular space „in between“ listening and saying something and try to make the thoughts, ideas and impressions that are coming up in the practitioner’s inner space, before he/she jumps to the next question. We also will invite participants to discuss possible consequences of these issues for the conversational process and its implications for a possible theory of SF practice.
