The Single Session Path of Brief Therapy in Finland

by Maiju Ahola & Maarit Pietiläinen, Finland

The client is at a crossroads, where one path is a continuation of the past and the other a therapy path. You don’t necessarily need a therapy path, but you feel like you can’t go on and on, so single session provides a stopping point between the two.

It’s possible that the client will end up going back to the old one, or continuing for longer therapy, but it’s also possible that the client will create a pathway between the two, using the process initiated in the single session. In single sessions, the client may feel in some way being "in between" - perhaps not yet fully engaged in therapy or not yet having found a clear solution to their problems. A single session may provide a therapeutic experience that helps the client move down a path to possible solution.

We are using interactive questions and discussions - reflecting participants own ability to help client in single session
