Between stimulus and response – neuroplasticity in practice.
How EEG neurofeedback creates a new ‘in-between’ by Paulina Nasiłowska, Poland.
Between what happens to us and how we respond, there is a space. And it is exactly there – in the in-between – where change begins. This space can be subtle: sometimes just a millisecond, sometimes a pause, sometimes a flicker of hesitation in someone’s eyes. But it is precisely there that the brain – and the person – learns to respond differently.
This talk is an invitation to explore that space together – through the lens of neuroplasticity and the practice of EEG neurofeedback. Not to teach a technique, but to see anew how change becomes possible when we give the brain and the
client the conditions to stay with the in-between. We will take a closer look at what happens in the brain when a client does something just slightly different than usual – even for a moment. We’ll see how the brain – flexible and attentive – learns from what it focuses on. How brain waves shift when someone stops acting automatically. And what it means when, for the first time, a person can notice: “Right now, I’m here… but maybe I could be somewhere else.” This is not about diagnosing. It’s about being curious. Together. Observing. Not fixing. This is the TSR moment – when the client still doesn’t know, but is already beginning to notice a difference. And it is right there – in that space of potential – where something new begins. Not a ready-made solution. But an invitation: to learn, to experiment, to relate. Not everything can be measured. But some things can be seen – even before they are named. And sometimes, that’s enough to take a step toward something different.
Paulina Nasiłowska:
I’m a solution-focused therapist (PSTTSR – in certification) working in private practice near Warsaw, Poland. I support individuals, couples and families, and have completed postgraduate training in Marriage and Family Studies. I’m a member of the Polish Solution-Focused Therapy Association and the Logotherapy Society.
At the previous EBTA Conference in Tenerife, I presented on integrating VR with SFBT – a talk titled “The Future of the Preferred Future.” It was an experience that inspired me to continue exploring how emerging tools can support subtle moments of change.
This year, I’m bringing a new topic – again on the edge of neuroscience, technology and transformation – focused on how EEG neurofeedback can make the in-between visible, embodied, and relational.
