In-between….

“…. that’s exactly where the change happens … it’s not in the direct parts, it’s in the relation between them”

Nora Bateson, 09.07 2019 - On the edge podcast, episode 2

Inspired by Nora, we think of the “in-between” as a place where we can shift our way of making sense of the world and understand ourselves in new ways. The “in-between” springs to life when one steps away from habitual ways, and - because of another relatable entity creating an “in-between”- feels reassured and encouraged to let go of habitual sense-making, thus enabling us to be able to grasp the new.

Gregory Bateson often explored the concept of "the space in-between" in the context of communication and relationships. He emphasized that understanding the space in-between is crucial for grasping how meaning and patterns emerge. Bateson’s idea of the space in-between can thus be interpreted as the relational or interactive space where patterns of communication and behavior unfold, and meanings are negotiated.

We invite you to think about how Bateson’s ideas suggest that “in-between” can be a fertile ground for change. What can happen in Roskilde, Denmark when we meet and see the space “in-between”, not as a void, but as a rich space of potential transformation?

About Roskilde Festival Folk High School

The idea of Roskilde Festival Folk High School came to be in 2004 during a seminar in Roskilde, where the municipality focused on the development of a new urban area surrounding the former concrete factory, Unicon. In 2008, the Roskilde Festival Association donated the first funds for the school.
In 2010, the school hosted its first course in relation to the Roskilde Festival. A team of around 30 students created a folk high school in the empty concrete factory. No one knew at the time that the building was to be transformed into a brand new folk high school. This was also where the students identified the need for the abbreviation, RoFH. The values of the school are influenced by the ideals of non-profit, the need to create, and volunteering engagements that make up Roskilde Festival as we know it.
